lyrics
I watch a raven hop. Hop-hop-hop, rock, rock,
Rock-to-rock, still hot round the house fire’s afterglow
Yesterday, saw that raven picking at an empty hard-hat
Rocking by the side of the road
I tossed a rock, it echoed cross the vacant lot,
The raven cawed and slowly, indolently flew away
I look down and stare, I shouldn’t care. I shouldn’t care
It’s not like we were gonna be good friends anyway
Some days, I can’t do it, sometimes I just can’t do it
The only way around it’s through it
Some days I can’t do it, some days I just can’t do it
The only way around it’s through it.
Maybe nature’s war, or maybe war is nurtured
Maybe we were never really gonna be good friends anyway
The clouds break up, windows down, windows up, the curtains puff
Enough! Enough! Time to get on with the day
See a red-tailed hawk, drop-drop-drop from a flying stop,
Like a rock, onto something in the grass below
Yesterday, I watched that hawk just staring at a raven
Picking at some empty helmet by the road
Some days, I can’t do it, sometimes I just can’t do it
The only way around it’s through it
Some days I can’t do it, some days I just can’t do it
The only way around it’s through it.

As a lifelong fan of psyche, I was delighted to have found this, stunned that I'd missed them for three decades and devastated by the news of Dallas' passing. Makes many of the album's lyrics even more poignant. I hear echoes of the Chocolate Watch Band, Long Ryders and both the pop and country sides of the Byrds. Stunning, and a contender for my album of the year. Iain H

Melancholic and energetic in equal parts, this album continues the trend of no New Pornographers album sounding the same. It's shaping up to be one of my favorites. heavydraws

1st time i heard DeathWish, i turned it off.
felt rushed, not the Isbell i've come to admire. really grab'd me when i took time to listen on the 2nd try. the writing on these songs stopped me in my tracks more than once. raw talent with just enough polish in the delivery.
thankyou Jason + 400 for another keeper swirlingmadness

It's really DBT at their finest. Reminds me at times of Southern Rock Opera, also their mid 2000s records, other times some of their more recent albums only more polished and cohesive and better melodies, better hooks, better lyrics.
Long live DBT! bdean42
